Sylvia Avenue Open Space is a small space in the northwest of the borough adjoining the west coast main line railway.
It lies at the extreme edge of Hatch End suburbia.
Beyond lie open fields and then Oxhey over the border in Hertfordshire.
The site is mainly secondary woodland that is difficult to enter and forms a refuge for deer, foxes and other wildlife. Thanks to support from the 1st Hatch End scout group, a small orchard was planted in 2022.
How to Find The Reserve
Sylvia Avenue Open Space lies at the north end of Sylvia Avenue in Hatch End, post code HA5 4QL. There is easy kerbside car parking.
The London LOOP (London Outer Orbital Path) path, a 150 mile circuit of London, passes through the site and is a good way to reach it on foot.
Visitors coming by public transport should take the H12 or H14 bus to the Hatch End Telephone Exchange stop, or the Lioness line to Hatch End station, and walk up Grimsdyke Road almost to its end where a footpath, signposted for the LOOP, leaves on the right. On reaching open fields turn right and follow the line of the LOOP along the backs of gardens to Sylvia Avenue Open Space. The LOOP path itself is seriously overgrown with bramble, so follow a parallel route in the field next door to the official route.
If all this sounds too complicated then simply follow the residential roads as shown on the map to the north end of Sylvia Avenue.
